The Henry Wood Sportsman’s Alliance has established the HWSA Scholarship Fund. The purpose of this scholarship award is to help finance the higher education of one graduating high school student from Henry County, Ohio and one graduating high school student from Wood County, Ohio, who desire to study and work in one of the academic fields described below. The Wood County scholarship shall be hereafter known as the “Thom Malone Memorial Scholarship”.
The Henry Wood Sportsman’s Alliance was formed in August 2014. The Mission Statement of the HWSA is:
1) the conservation of natural resources in order to manage the game, fish and other wildlife in its habitat in Henry and Wood Counties, along with surrounding areas;
2) to promote and manage friendly relations with landowners and sportsmen;
3) to cooperate in obtaining proper respect for and observation of fish and game laws; and
4) to create a lasting legacy to the outdoors through education, preservation, tradition and recreation.
In keeping with that Mission Statement, the HWSA has decided to offer a $1,000 one-time scholarship to a graduating senior who is a resident of Henry County, Ohio and a $1,000 one-time scholarship to a graduating senior who is a resident of Wood County, Ohio.
One (1) individual who (a) is graduating from a Henry County high school or (b) is a resident of Henry County but will be graduating from a high school in a county adjoining Henry County will be selected annually to receive this scholarship award. In addition one (1) individual who (a) is graduating from a Wood County high school or (b) is a resident of Wood County but will be graduating from a high school in a county adjoining Wood County will be selected annually to receive this scholarship award.
The scholarship fund hopes to provide each student selected with an award of One Thousand Dollars $($1,000.00) to be used toward their education.
To be eligible for consideration, the student must intend to select as his/her major field of collegiate study one (1) of the following:
1. Freshwater fisheries management or biology;
2. Wildlife management, conservation or biology;
3. Forestry, forest management, forest science of watershed management;
4. Outdoor park and recreation administration or management
5. Water or land resource management.
If the college of university of the student’s choosing does not offer a bachelor’s degree in the aforementioned major fields of study, then the following major fields of study will be acceptable, upon the conditions that the courses selected by the student indicate an interest in the applied or management area of the major field and meet the approval of the Scholarship Selection Committee:

Application for this scholarship award shall consist of completing the attached Application Form and a potential interview with the Scholarship Selection Committee.
As an examination of the Application Form will disclose, the criteria for selection of the scholarship recipient include the field of study of the applicant, the applicant’s academic record, and extracurricular activities, activities outside of school, hobbies and collegiate and professional goals. Financial need is NOT one of the criteria.
By completing the Application Form, each applicant and his/her parent or guardian thereby consent to inspection of his/her high school academic transcript by the Scholarship Selection Committee and to the release of requested information and documentation by his/her high school administrator.
This is a one-time scholarship and is not renewable.
